CAPE DON & CAPE PILLAR WERE BUILT AT THE STATE DOCKYARD IN NEWCASTLE IN 1962/63 BUILT FOR THE COMMONWEALTH LIGHTHOUSE SERVICE. THEY WERE ONLY 2,103 TON GRT AND HAD A SERVICE SPEED OF 10 TO 12.7 KNOTS, A COMPLEMENT OF 39 CREW AND ACCOMMODATION FOR 12 PASSENGERS “RELIEF LIGHTHOUSE CREWS & FAMILIES”. THE CAPE BOATS HAD EXCELLENT ACCOMMODATION FOR THEIR TIME. THE CAPE DON SOCIETY INC. IN SYDNEY AT BALLS HEAD BAY ARE RESTORING THE CAPE DON TO HER OPERATIONAL GLORY
